The FIRST RESPONSE™ Early Result In-Stream Pregnancy Test detects in urine the hormone your body makes during pregnancy (hCG human chorionic gonadotropin). The FIRST RESPONSE™ Early Result In-Stream Pregnancy Test is sensitive enough that most women have enough hCG to be detected as early as 6 days sooner than the day of their missed period (5 days before day of expected period). The amount of pregnancy hormone increases as pregnancy progresses.
You can test as early as 6 days before your missed period (5 days before day of expected period)1. You can use the FIRST RESPONSE™ Early Result In-Stream Pregnancy Test any time of the day. You don´t have to use the first morning urine. Generally, however, your first morning urine contains the highest level of pregnancy hormones.
First ResponseTM In-Stream and Digital Pregnancy Test is >99% accurate1. However, some pregnant women may not have detectable amounts of the pregnancy hormone in their urine on the day they test or may have miscalculated the first day of their period.1
After following the instructions for use, if there are two pink lines in the Result Window this is a positive result. One line may be lighter than the other; they do not have to match. If there is only one pink line in the Result Window this is a negative result.
It is important to follow the instructions in the product leaflet. With the FIRST RESPONSE™ Early Result In-Stream Pregnancy Test you hold the test in the stream of urine for 5 seconds ONLY. It is recommended to use a watch/clock to time the 5 seconds. You may collect your urine in a clean dry cup and immerse the entire Absorbent Tip in the urine for 5 seconds only if preferred.
A positive (pregnant) test results shows that the pregnancy hormone (hCG) was detected. You should see your doctor to confirm that you are pregnant. Because this test detects very low levels of hCG, some women may test positive even if they are not pregnant. Remember, this test is not intended to replace your doctor’s diagnosis. A positive (pregnant) test result shows that the pregnancy hormone (hCG) was detected. See your doctor to confirm that you are pregnant.
You may not be pregnant, or it may be too early to tell. If you do not get your period within a few days, you should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE™ Early Result In-Stream Pregnancy Test. It is possible that you miscalculated the length of your cycle or your urine may not have had enough pregnancy hormone for the FIRST RESPONSE™ Early Result In-Stream Pregnancy Test to give you a positive result. If you retest again and no hCG is found and your period has still not started, you should call your doctor.
Your result should appear within three minutes. There should be at least one pink line in the Result Window at five minutes to indicate that the test is completed and that you have done it correctly. If not, the test is invalid. This could be due to insufficient urine on the Absorbent Tip or not holding the device with the Absorbent Tip pointing downward while replacing the Overcap. You should retest with FIRST RESPONSE™ Early Result In-Stream Pregnancy Test, carefully following all directions.
The test result should be read as soon as possible after waiting the 3 minutes and within 10 minutes. A negative result (1 pink line) will last for 10 minutes. After the 10 minute period, disregard any further changes, it is still a negative result.
Only medications containing the pregnancy hormone (hCG) can affect the result of the test. The test should not be affected by hormone therapies containing Clomiphene citrate, alcohol, painkillers, antibiotics or the contraceptive pill. Please consult your healthcare professional if you are taking any medicines.

You may not be pregnant, or it may be too early to tell. If you do not get your period within 7 days, you should retest with another First Response™ Digital Pregnancy Test. It is possible that you miscalculated the length of your cycle or your urine may not have had enough pregnancy hormone for the test to register a ‘YES+’ result. If upon retesting you get another ‘NO-’ result and your period has still not started, you should call your doctor.
A ‘YES+’ test result shows that the pregnancy hormone (hCG) was detected, which normally indicates pregnancy. You must see your doctor to confirm that you are pregnant. If you test positive, but think you may not be pregnant, you should check with your doctor.

After you determine the best day to start testing based on your monthly cycle, you can use the FIRST RESPONSE™ Complete Pregnancy Planning Kit any time that day. You do not have to use your first morning urine. However, you should do the test about the same time each day. Reduce your liquid for two hours before testing, since drinking excessive amounts of liquid intake can dilute the LH in your urine.
Since not every woman ovulates mid-cycle, you may not detect the LH surge in the first 7 days of testing. This could mean you have not ovulated yet and you should continue testing with additional FIRST RESPONSE™ Ovulation Prediction Tests or start testing a few days earlier next month.
First, it is important to remember that it can take normal, healthy couples many months to become pregnant. There are many factors that affect your ability to become pregnant even if you have been able to have intercourse during your most fertile time. If after several months you have no success, consult your physician. Since you have been monitoring your LH surge with the FIRST RESPONSE™ Complete Pregnancy Planning Kit, you will be able to give your doctor a clearer picture of when you have been ovulating.
Your two most fertile days begin with the LH surge. You are most likely to get pregnant if you have intercourse within 24-36 hours after you detect your LH surge.
Certain medical conditions may adversely affect the reliability of this test for predicting ovulation. These include pregnancy, postpartum, post-abortion, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ovarian cysts, the onset of menopause, and untreated hypothyroidism. Some prescription drugs, such as menotropins for injection, may affect the result you see. If you are undergoing therapy with Clomiphene citrate, please consult your physician for the appropriate time to begin testing. Some medications containing hCG or LH may affect the test. Please consult your healthcare professional if you are taking such medicines. Women with medically diagnosed fertility problems should consult their physician before using this product.
After using the pill your cycle may be irregular and make take some time to stabilise again. You may wish to wait until you have had two normal periods before starting to use the FIRST RESPONSE™ Complete Pregnancy Planning Kit. Follow your physician’s advice on when to best try to become pregnant.
Sperm can survive up to 72 hours (3 days), and this test predicts your LH surge only up to 24-36 hours in advance. Therefore, if you have intercourse before you discover your surge, the egg can still be fertilised.

1 Church & Dwight Co. Inc. conducted a study based on protocol # 172 to determine First Response In Stream pregnancy test’s ability to detect hCG hormone as an aid in the early detection of pregnancy in the days before the missed period. Approximately 575 urine samples from 52 different conceptive cycles were used. The study detected an increase in hCG hormone in 62% of women, 6 days before the missed period (5 days before the day of expected period), in 78% of women 5 days before their missed period, in 87% of women 4 days before their missed period, in 98% of women 3 days before their missed period and in 99% of women 2 days before their missed period
2 In a study conducted by Church & Dwight Co. Inc under diagnostic protocol #330 to evaluate the First Response Digital pregnancy test’s ability to detect hCG hormone as an aid in the early detection of pregnancy in the days before the missed period, a total of 504 urine samples from 50 characterized cycle segments taken from conceptive cycles were collected from 50 different pregnant women. The study showed that the hCG hormone was detected in 60% of pregnant women, 6 days before the missed period (5 days before the day of expected period), in 86% of pregnant women 5 days before their missed period, in 96% of pregnant women 4 days before their missed period, >99% of pregnant women 3 days before their missed period.
4 Church &Dwight Co. Inc. conducted a study based on test diagnostic protocol # 549 on First Response Ovulation test in order to evaluate the inter and intra lot precision of urine standards containing known levels of hLH hormone prepared in LH non- surge urine pool. Devices from three batches were tested in replicates of ten with urine standards containing different concentrations of hLH hormones. LH non- surge urine pool with no hLH was also tested. Results showed the device function as expected. There were no invalid or unexpected results noted.
5 Ovulation Prediction Sticks (LH) The following claim “Ovulation test is over 99% accurate in detecting LH surge in Laboratory Studies” is based on the unpublished study ‘First Response/ Answer Ovulation Predictor Test-Analytical Accuracy Evaluation’ sponsored by Church & Dwight Co. Inc., and reported by Mary Beth Boyle.
